Are you looking to add Nantucket to your Woods Hole vacation? Here is our Treehouse Lodge guide to Nantucket.

1. Ferry via Steamship Authority OR Hy-line Cruise from Hyannis to travel from Cape Cod to Nantucket

  • Route: The most common and convenient way to get from Woods Hole to Nantucket is by taking the Steamship Authority fast ferry or Hy-line Cruise. Travel Tip: Purchase your passenger ahead of time. (Average cost is $42-$47 each way)
  • Departure: Ferries depart from the Hyannis terminal. Both ferry lines leave out of Hyannis which is about a 50-minutes drive from Woods Hole. Travel Tip: Add on-site parking to your ticket reservation ahead of time, worth the small fee in our opinion. Also, allow yourself an additional half-hour travel time.
  • Travel Time: The ferry ride takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Travel Tip: Get an outdoor seat on a warm day and enjoy the fresh sea breeze as you ride through Nantucket Sound.
  • Types of Ferries: Steamship Authority operates both passenger-only fast ferries and ferries that accommodate vehicles. If you’re planning to bring a car, you’ll need a reservation, especially during peak seasons. Travel Tip: The car ferries are 2 hours long. Only reserve this if you plan on staying overnight.

Hy-Line Cruise operates with passengers onboard only. Travel time is 1 hour. Travel Tip: Arrive at least 45 minutes prior to your departure time.

2. Booking Tickets

  • Schedule: Ferry schedules vary by season. In the winter, there are fewer sailings, so it’s important to check the schedule in advance. You can book tickets online or at the terminal.
  • You can book your ferry tickets directly through the Steamship Authority website or purchase them at the terminal.
  • Important Tip: Make sure to check the schedule ahead of time, particularly if you are traveling during the off-season when ferry service may be less frequent.

3. Arriving on Nantucket

  • The ferry will take you directly to the Nantucket ferry terminal, located near the center of town. From there, you can explore Nantucket by walking, biking, The Wave Regional Transit Authority or taking a taxi.
